Traditional Mass

The rubrics and English translation are taken from the New Roman Missal in Latin and English by Rev. F.X. Lasance and Rev. Francis Augustine Walsh, O.S.B. (1945).

New Order of Mass

The rubrics and English are taken from the New Missal, 2011 translation, with some minor additions.



A LOW MASS is presented - in a Sung Mass the congregation often join the choir with the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and the Agnus Dei, as well as saying outloud the "Lord, I am not worthy..." ["Domine, non sum dignus..."], silently reciting the other prayers.

A general Mass is presented with standard options, including the Greeting, the Act of Confession, the "Mystery of Faith", and the final Blessing. A point by point comparison is very difficult as many prayers are optional and the rubrics are usually not specified in a standard missal (often left to the priest in many instances), so the basic Ordinary of the Mass is listed for each liturgy.

THE ORDINARY OF THE MASS

PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR

(continues till the "Take away from us our iniquities" prayer)

[Bowing before the altar, the priest makes the sign of the cross, saying:]

P: In the name of the Father, (✠) and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

P: I will go in to the altar of God.

R: To God, Who giveth joy to my youth.

INTRODUCTORY RITE

[The priest kisses the altar, goes to his chair and stands facing the people.]

P: In the name of the Father, (✠) and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

R: Amen.



PSALM 42

[The priest and server say alternately:]

P: Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.

R: For Thou art, God, my strength; why hast Thou cast me off? and why do I go all sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?

P: Send forth Thy light and Thy truth: they conducted me and brought me unto Thy holy hill, and into Thy tabernacles.

R: And I will go in to the altar of God: to God Who giveth joy to my youth.

P: To Thee, O God, my God, I will give praise upon the harp: why art thou sad, O my soul, and why dost thou disquiet me?

R: Hope in God, for I will still give praise to Him, the salvation of my countenance and my God.

ACT OF CONFESSION

[Bowing down low, the priest says:]

P: I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever virgin, to blessed Michael the archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, to all the saints, and to you, brethren, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed: [The priest strikes his breast three times saying:] through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary ever virgin, blessed Michael the archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, all the saints, and you, brethren, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

R: May almighty God have mercy on thee and, having forgiven thee thy sins, bring thee to life everlasting.

P: Amen.

[The server now says:]

[Going up to the altar, the priest prays silently:]

P: Take away from us our iniquities, we beseech Thee, O Lord; that, being made pure in heart we may be worthy to enter into the Holy of Holies. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

[He bows down over the altar, which he kisses, saying:]

P: We beseech Thee, O Lord, by the merits of those of Thy saints whose relics are here, and of all the saints, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to pardon me all my sins. Amen.

[Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the Priest invites the faithful, saying:]

P: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

[After a brief silence, the priest and people together recite:]

A: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

[And, striking their breast, they say:]

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

[Now follows the Gloria, when it is prescribed. Standing at the middle of the altar, the priest extends and joins his hands, and making a slight bow says:]

[Then, when it is prescribed, this hymn is either sung or said.]

P: Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good will. We praise Thee; we bless Thee; we adore Thee; we glorify Thee. We give Thee thanks for Thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father almighty, O Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Who takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Who sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For Thou alone art holy; Thou alone art the Lord; Thou alone, O Jesus Christ, together with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

[Turning to the people, the priest says:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

A: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE PRAYER / COLLECT

[Here the priest says the collect appointed for the day.]

P: Let us pray.

[When the priest finished the collect, the server says:]

R: Amen.

[When this hymn is concluded, the Priest, with hands joined, says:]

P: Let us pray.

[And all pray in silence with the Priest for a while. Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Collect prayer, at the end of which the people acclaim:]

R: Amen.

THE EPISTLE

[At the Epistle side of the altar, the priest reads the Epistle or Lesson from the Mass he is celebrating, after which the server says:] R: Thanks be to God.

[Then the reader goes to the ambo and reads the First Reading, while all sit and listen. To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:]

The Word of the Lord.

R: Thanks be to God.

[The psalmist or cantor sings or says the Psalm, with the people making the response.]

[After this, if there is to be a Second Reading, a reader reads it from the ambo, as above. To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:]

The Word of the Lord.

R: Thanks be to God.




THE GOSPEL

[The priest, returning to the middle of the altar, bows down, joins his hands, and says:]

P: Cleanse my heart and my lips, O almighty God, Who didst cleanse with a burning coal the lips of the prophet Isaias; and vouchsafe in Thy loving kindness so to purify me that I may be enabled worthily to announce Thy holy Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to bless me. The Lord be in my heart and on my lips, that I may worthily and becomingly announce His gospel. Amen.

[The priest goes to the Gospel side of the altar and reads the Gospel for the Mass he is celebrating.]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

P: (✠) The following (or the beginning) is taken from the Holy Gospel according to St. N.

R: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

[At the end of the Gospel, the server says:]

R: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

P: May our sins be blotted out by the words of the Gospel.

[Meanwhile, if incense is used, the Priest puts some into the thurible. After this, the Deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the Priest, asks for the blessing, saying in a low voice:]

Your blessing, Father.

[The Priest says in a low voice:]

May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, ✠ and of the Holy Spirit.

[The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies:]

Amen.

[If, however, a Deacon is not present, the Priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly:]

Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.

[The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, if appropriate, by ministers with incense and candles. There he says:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with your spirit.

P: A reading from the holy Gospel according to N.

[and, at the same time, he makes the Sign of the Cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast. The people acclaim:]

Glory to you, O Lord.

[Then the Deacon, or the Priest, incenses the book, if incense is used, and proclaims the Gospel. At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:]

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

R: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

[Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:

P: Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away.

[Then follows the Homily, which is to be preached by a Priest or Deacon on all Sundays and Holydays of Obligation; on other days, it is recommended.]

THE NICENE CREED

[The priest returns to the middle of the altar and recites the Creed:]

P: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages; God of God, light of light, true God of true God; begotten, not made; consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, AND WAS MADE MAN (Here genuflect). He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And the third day He arose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven. He sitteth at the right hand of the Father: and He shall come again with glory, to judge the living and the dead: and His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who, together with the Father and the Son, is adored and glorified: Who spoke by the prophets. And one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. And I expect the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

[The priest kisses the altar and turning to the people, says:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

P: Let us pray.

[At the end of the Homily, the Symbol or Profession of Faith or Creed, when prescribed, is either sung or said:]

A; I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [At the words that follow, up to and including 'and became man', all bow.] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. [Instead of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, especially during Lent and Easter time, the baptismal Symbol of the Roman Church, known as the Apostles’ Creed, may be used.]

A: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, [At the words that follow, up to and including 'the Virgin Mary', all bow.] who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

[Then follows the Universal Prayer, that is, the Prayer of the Faithful or Bidding Prayers.]

THE OFFERTORY

[The priest now says the Offertory for the Mass being offered. He then uncovers the chalice and in a lower voice says:]

[The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:]

The Offering of the Host

P: Receive, O Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host, which I, Thine unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, for my countless sins, trespasses, and omissions; likewise for all here present, and for all faithful Christians, whether living or dead, that it may avail both me and them to salvation, unto life everlasting. Amen.

P: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

[Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal. If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:]

R: Blessed be God for ever.

[The priest goes to the Epistle side and pours wine and water into the chalice.]

[The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:]

P: O God, Who in creating man didst exalt his nature very wonderfully and yet more wonderfully didst establish it anew: by the mystery signified in the mingling of this water and wine, grant us to have part in the Godhead of Him Who hath vouchsafed to share our manhood, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God; world without end. Amen.

P: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

The Offering of the Chalice

[At the middle of the altar, the priest says:]

[The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:]

P: We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency that it may ascend as a sweet odor before Thy divine majesty, for our own salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.

P: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink. [Then he places the chalice on the corporal. If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:]

R: Blessed be God for ever.

[After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:]

P: Humbled in mind, and contrite of heart, may we find favour with Thee, O Lord; and may the sacrifice we this day offer up be well pleasing to Thee, Who art our Lord and our God.

P: Come, Thou, the Sanctifier, God, almighty and everlasting: bless (✠) this sacrifice which is prepared for the glory of Thy holy name.

P: With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.

The Lavabo

[Going to the Epistle side, the priest washes his fingers and says:]

[Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:]

P: I will wash my hands among the innocent, and will cleanse compass Thine altar, O Lord. That I may hear the voice of praise, and tell of all Thy wondrous works. I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy house, and the place where Thy glory dwelleth. Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked; nor my life with men of blood. In whose hands are iniquities: their right hand is filled with gifts. But as for me, I have walked in my innocence; redeem me, and have mercy on me. My foot hath stood in the right way; in the churches I will bless Thee, O Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

[The priest returns to the middle of the altar and bowing slightly, says:]

P: Receive, O holy Trinity, this oblation offered up by us to Thee in memory of the passion, resurrection, and ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honour of blessed Mary, ever a virgin, of blessed John the Baptist, of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, of these, and of all the saints, that it may be available to their honour and to our salvation; and may they whose memory we celebrate on earth vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

P: Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

The Orate Fratres

[The priest kisses the altar and turning to the people, says:]

[Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says:]

P: Brethren, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be well pleasing to God the Father almighty.

P: Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

R: May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and glory of His name, to our own benefit, and to that of all His Holy Church.

R: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

The Secret Prayer

[Then with hands extended, the priest says the Secret prayers.]

[The priest now says in a louder voice:]

P: World without end.

R: Amen.

Prayer over the Gifts

[Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the Offerings, at the end of which the people acclaim:]

R: Amen.

The Preface

P:The Lord be with you

R: And with your spirit

P: Lift up your hearts.

R: We have them lifted up unto the Lord

[The Preface of the Holy Trinity and all Sundays which have no appointed preface:]

[The priest then reads the Preface, which varies according to the Season or Feast. An example is given, following that of Sundays of the Year I:]

P: It is truly meet and just, right and profitable, for us, at all times, and in all places, to give thanks to Thee, O Lord, the holy One, the Father almighty, the everlasting God: Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord, not in the singleness of one Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For that which, according to Thy revelation, we believe of Thy glory, the same we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or distinction; so that in the confession of one true and eternal Godhead we adore distinctness in persons, oneness in essence, and equality in majesty: Which the angels praise, and the archangels, the cherubim also and the seraphim, who cease not, day by day crying out with one voice to repeat:

P: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For through his Paschal Mystery, he accomplished the marvellous deed, by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for your own possession, to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim:

The Sanctus

[The bell is now rung three times.] P: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Canon of the Mass

[The people kneel.]

[Then follows one of the Eucharistic Prayers. Eucharistic Prayer I is presented as it is the Roman Canon. Words in brackets may be omitted. The people kneel.]

[The priest now prays silently.]

P: Therefore, we humbly pray and beseech Thee, most merciful Father, through Jesus Christ Thy Son, Our Lord, to receive and to bless these (✠) gifts, these (✠) presents, these (✠) holy unspotted sacrifices, which we offer up to Thee, in the first place, for Thy holy Catholic Church, that it may please Thee to grant her peace, to guard, unite, and guide her, throughout the world: as also for Thy servant N., our Pope, and N., our Bishop, and for all who are orthodox in belief and who profess the Catholic and apostolic faith.

[The priest says out-loud:]

P: To you, therefore, most merciful Father, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord: that you accept and bless ✠ these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished sacrifices, which we offer you firstly for your holy catholic Church. Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her throughout the whole world, together with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, and all those who, holding to the truth, hand on the catholic and apostolic faith.

The Commemoration of the Living

P: Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy servants, N. and N., and of all here present, whose faith and devotion are known to Thee, for whom we offer, or who offer up to Thee, this sacrifice of praise, for themselves, their families, and their friends, for the salvation of their souls and the health and welfare they hope for, and who now pay their vows to Thee, God eternal, living, and true.

P. Remember, Lord, your servants N. and N. and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise or they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them: for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true.

P: Let not the partaking of Thy Body, O Lord Jesus Christ, which I, all unworthy, presume to receive, turn to my judgement and condemnation; but through Thy loving kindness may it be to me a safeguard and remedy for soul and body; Who, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, God, world without end. Amen.

 

At the Communion

[The priest genuflects, rises and says:]

P: I will take the bread of heaven, and will call upon the name of the Lord.

[Taking the Sacred Host with his left hand, the priest strikes his breast three times, saying (here the bell is rung each of the three times with the priest):]

P: Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. (three times)

[Holding the Sacred Host in his right hand, the priest makes the sign of the cross with it and says:]

P: May the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep my soul unto life everlasting. Amen.

[The priest receives Holy Communion and after a brief meditation continues:]

P: What shall I render unto the Lord for all the things that He hath rendered unto me? I will take the chalice of salvation and will call upon the name of the Lord. With high praises will I call upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from all mine enemies.

[The priest takes the Chalice in his right hand and makes the sign of the cross, saying:]

P: May the Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep my soul unto life everlasting. Amen.

[The priest faces the people with the Ciborium and, holding up one of the Sacred Particles before the communicants, he says:]

P: Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who taketh away the sins of the world.

[The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:]

P: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

[And together with the people he adds once:]

A: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

P: Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. (three times)

[The Priest, facing the altar, says quietly:]

P: May the Body of Christ keep me safe for everlasting life.

[And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ. Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:]

P: May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for everlasting life.

[And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.]

Communion of the Faithful

[Here Holy Communion is administered to those of the faithful who desire to receive it.]



[The priest gives Holy Communion to each communicant saying:]

[After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The Priest raises a host slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:]



P: May the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep your soul unto life everlasting. Amen.

P: The Body of Christ.

R: Amen.

[If any are present who are to receive Holy Communion under both kinds, the rite described in the proper place is to be followed.]

[When the distribution of Communion is over, the Priest or a Deacon or an acolyte purifies the paten over the chalice and also the chalice itself.]

[When all have received Communion, he returns to the altar and replaces the Ciborium in the tabernacle. He then receives wine in the Chalice and says:]

[While he carries out the purification, the Priest says quietly:]

P: Into a pure heart, O Lord, may we receive the heavenly food which has passed our lips; bestowed upon us in time, may it be the healing of our souls for eternity.

[The priest goes to the Epistle side and, while the server pours wine and water over his fingers, he says:]

P: May Thy Body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk cleave to mine inmost parts: and do Thou grant that no stain of sin remain in me, whom pure and holy mysteries have refreshed: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

P: What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess in purity of heart, that what has been given to us in time may be our healing for eternity.

The Communion Verse

[The priest at the Epistle side recites the Communion for the Mass being celebrated.]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

[Then the Priest may return to the chair. If appropriate, a sacred silence may be observed for a while, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be sung.]

The Postcommunion Prayer

P: Let us pray.

[The priest at the Epistle side recites the Postcommunion for the Mass being celebrated.]

R: Amen.

[Then, standing at the altar or at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined, the Priest says:]

P: Let us pray.

[All pray in silence with the Priest for a while, unless silence has just been observed. Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer after Communion, at the end of which the people acclaim:]

R: Amen.

The Blessing and Dismissal

[Then he returns to the middle, kisses the altar, and turning toward the people says:]

[If they are necessary, any brief announcements to the people follow here. Then the dismissal takes place. The Priest, facing the people and extending his hands, says:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

P: Go, the Mass is ended.

R: Thanks be to God.

[Bowing down over the altar, the priest says:]

P: May the lowly homage of my service be pleasing to Thee, O most holy Trinity: and do Thou grant that the sacrifice which I, all unworthy, have offered up in the sight of Thy majesty, may be acceptable to Thee, and, because of Thy loving kindness, may avail to atone to Thee for myself and for all those for whom I have offered it up. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

[The priest kisses the altar, and at the word "Pater", turns toward the people, blesses them, saying:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with your spirit.

P: May almighty God, the Father, and the Son (✠), and the Holy Ghost, bless you.

R: Amen.

P: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, (✠) and the Holy Spirit.

R: Amen

The Last Gospel

[The priest now goes to the Gospel side of the altar; he makes the sign of the cross, first upon the altar, and then upon his forehead, lips, and heart, and reads the Last Gospel:]

P: The Lord be with you.

R: And with thy Spirit.

P: The beginning of the holy Gospel, according to St. John.

R: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

P: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men: and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him. He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light. That was the true light which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them He gave great power to become the sons of God: to them that believe in His name: who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

R: Thanks be to God.

[Then the deacon, or the Priest himself, with hands joined and facing the people, says:]

P: Go forth, the Mass is ended.

Or:
P: Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.

Or:
P: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.

Or:
P: Go in peace.

R: Thanks be to God.

[The Priest venerates the altar as usual with a kiss, as at the beginning. After making a profound bow with the ministers, he withdraws.]

Prayers after Low Mass

[After Low Mass, the priest kneeling at the altar steps, says with the people the prayers which follow:]

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. (three times)



Salve Regina

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor Ad banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.

P: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

A: That we be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

P: Let us pray. O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with favour upon Thy people who cry to Thee; and through the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of her spouse, blessed Joseph, of Thy holy apostles, Peter and Paul, and all the saints, mercifully and graciously hear the prayers which we pour forth to Thee for the conversion of sinners and for the liberty and exaltation of holy mother Church. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. St. Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. We humbly beseech God to command him. And do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the divine power thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who roam through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.



Invocation after Mass

P: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
