Statue of Our Lady of Walsingham

CODE:
OLW

This handsome statue of Our Lady of Walsingham with the Christ Child stands one foot tall.  The detailing is fine, taken from a carved original.  The resin statue is painted to resemble wood.

Tradition records that Our Lady appeared to Richeldis de Faverches, a pious English noblewoman, in 1061 in the village of Walsingham in Norfolk.  At Our Lady's request Richeldis built a "Holy House", modelled on the home of the Holy Family in Nazareth, and here the image of Our Lady of Walsingham came to be venerated.  The original image of Our Lady of Walsingham was destroyed at the Reformation and the present-day statue is based on the image depicted on the medieval seal of the shrine.
