New online Latin and Greek courses
Online Latin Courses
Curated by working Catholic Latinists Matthew Spencer MA (Oxon.) MPhil (Cardiff) and Peter Day-Milne MA (Oxon.) MPhil (St Andrews), we are pleased to share the following details of online Latin courses:
— Study in a small and supportive group online, over 16 weeks;
— Take an innovative “study-in-your-own-time” video course.
Please email [email protected] for more information. Both study options cover four modules. For self-study (the budget option at £35 a module) students do the following prayers in order: Ave Maria, Pater Noster, Salve Regina, Ave Regina Caelorum. The in-person video-conferencing version contains the following modules (£200 a module, with discounts for English and Welsh priests etc. – further details on application):
Module 1: beginning grammar. 26th February, ending 24th March. This is taught by Peter Day-Milne, who authors the Latin Mass Society’s “Ordo”. Encounter the basic forms and be ready to move on — after a 4-week break — to:
Module 2: the “rubrics” of the Traditional Latin Mass. These texts mix high solemnity with everyday practicality and, perhaps understandably, they are well designed for the intermediate student of Latin. Back in the day not everyone’s Latin was of the same level! Accordingly they are written in an approachable register even for the new student of Latin. Most importantly they give good opportunities to make progress in terms of comprehension. Matthew Spencer, course director, teaches this portion.
Module 3: intermediate grammar. Taught by Peter Day-Milne.
Module 4: the Divine Office, according to older liturgical texts. See DivinumOfficium.com. Taught by Matthew Spencer.
Students make progress together in small, supportive groups. A graduate of the course, a priest from England, writes:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the two modules that I have undertaken. The first module gave an excellent grounding in Latin vocabulary, grammar, and verb conjugations, the rules of how Latin works. The second built on this knowledge used in the study of the rubrics of the Mass. As a mature student, who had no formal introduction to the Latin language at school, the approach taken by the teachers to lead us through the complexities and the joys of the language has meant that I have managed to get to grips with the material that we are reading fairly quickly. The lessons have been challenging, but enjoyable, and I would encourage anyone who has an interest in learning Latin to sign up for the next available course.”
Online Greek Course
Do you already have intermediate Greek? A small group of people are making their way through the Gospel of Mark, paying attention to the critical markings (in the Nestle-Aland edition). If this sounds like your level and interest – but you certainly don’t have to be an expert and plenty of friendly discussion takes place – write to [email protected] for more information and the monthly pay-as-you-go course price.
